Introduction to shock absorber airbags (also known as air suspension)

Function of shock absorber airbags

1. Alleviate the hydraulic changes in the hydraulic chamber when the inner rod moves!

2. Anti-air travel function makes the hydraulic damping work better!

The first point is easy to understand. Although the inner rod is relatively thin, the liquid cannot be compressed. After the pressure of the inner rod enters, the volume of the inner chamber is slightly reduced, and high pressure has been generated, and the shock absorber is leaking oil! Generally, the shock absorbers of ordinary cars do not fill the hydraulic inflation, and retain the lower inflation to produce this volume change. However, the inflator may produce bubbles in the hydraulic oil, and the bubbles will produce excitement when passing through the piston, wake up! If used, it can shrink this volume change by contraction, and it can also inflate to avoid the inflator affecting the shock absorption effect!

Second, if there is no airbag, when the shock absorber is compressed quickly, the space under the piston is likely to produce a vacuum. When the shock absorber rebounds, there is no damping in the stroke where the vacuum is produced, which affects the shock absorption effect. This area is called "empty travel". This situation does not matter much on civilian cars, but it is a big problem when used in racing cars where the shock absorbers need to move at high speed and violently! The airbag shock absorber is filled with high-pressure gas, which is equivalent to greatly increasing the air pressure in the hydraulic chamber, which can effectively avoid the "empty travel" of the vacuum at the lower end of the piston when the shock absorber is compressed, and improve the shock absorption effect!

It can be seen that the role of the airbag has nothing to do with "making the shock absorber harder" or "raising the roof a little bit". I hope that no friends will fall into such misunderstandings again!

If we use the hydraulic principle to explain it, liquid is incompressible (ideal state), but gas can be compressed. This can provide a longer compression stroke. Moreover, it is easy to adjust the pressure of gas. The reason for using nitrogen is of course because the air pressure changes less with temperature. There should also be a piston between the oil and gas, or the gas is installed in an elastic airbag, which can be large or small like a balloon. I haven't taken it apart to see it, so please don't laugh at me, experts.

In fact, when changing the oil of an ordinary front shock absorber, the oil is not filled up, and some space is also left. This part of the air is in a closed environment and also participates in the work. It's just that it is not relatively isolated from the oil, the effect may be worse, and it does not have the adjustment function. With a simple modification, add a valve core, it should be no problem to pump air into it.
